About Regenerative Living

How does Regenerative Living differ from Sustainable Living?

Sustainability, while a worthwhile goal and noble cause, focuses more on reducing carbon footprint and mitigating human impact on Nature.  We propose a new goal: Regenerative Living!

EcoOasis’ Regenerative Living:

EcoOasis creates Neighborhoods and Homesteads that go beyond sustainable and onto Regenerative Living!

What is a Regenerative Neighborhood?

A Regenerative Neighborhood is a  small community that is intentionally designed, developed and domesticated in order to renew or restore the biological system of which it is part.

Our Property abuts a wildlife corridor and was a fallow farm overgrown by non food producing sucker plants.  We will plant hundreds of food producing trees and plants that will restore and create enough abundance for Neighbors of all types – including monkeys, toucans, and more!

Water, Energy, Cooling, and Resource Management solutions contribute to the overall Regenerative Living Experience!

What is Permaculture?

Permaculture, derived from Permanent Agriculture and expanded to include Permanent Culture, is a branch of ecological design, ecological engineering, environmental design, construction and integrated water resources management that develops sustainable architecture, regenerative and self-maintained habitat and agricultural systems modeled from natural ecosystems.

We Design for Abundance using Permaculture Design and Principles!

Will I have an Outdoor Drying Area?

Yes! With the abundance of sunny days here in Costa Rica, you can save a huge amount of energy by utilizing your Outdoor Laundry Drying Area. While you may want to have a clothes dryer as a backup for rainy days, any regenerative homestead is not complete without this efficient feature.

System specs:

9m2 of roofed drying space

Wood framed structure with polycarbonate clear roofing panels

About Regenerative Neighborhood Infrastructure

Will I have local-spring, gravity-fed Water?

Yes! The neighborhood water system will consist of a mainline water source fed from the AYA community system. The AYA community water is fed from a large spring and is all gravity fed, ensuring that there will be water even during a power outage. Each home will have a private water meter connected to the mainline, with a private line running from the meter to the home.

What about the Roads within the Neighborhood?

Roads

All roads have been designed by a licensed engineer and installed by professional road builders. The roads consist of two different substrates to ensure longevity as well as beauty.

The base layer is 6 inches of quarry rock which creates a solid foundational structure. The top cap is 2 inches of 1/4 inch gravel to ensure a smooth surface and also nice aesthetic appeal. Once the road material was in place and spread with a tractor, the final stage was to compact all the roads with a steam roller.

Owners shall assume responsibility for ongoing maintenance of the road.  There will not be a homeowner or maintenance fee but Owners should plan to maintain roads as needed.  If desired, we can help to arrange a maintenance contract with a qualified local vendor.

Will we have Underground Electric System throughout the neighborhood?

Yes! The neighborhood itself will have all-underground public utility grid energy. The cost of underground electric is more than three times greater than above ground, but EcoOasis feels underground electric is imperative to ensure aesthetic beauty, preserve views, create safety for wildlife and avoid any future issues with all of the trees we are planting in the community.

The mainline grid will connect to a central point where all private meters will be located. A private underground electric line will run from the meter box to each house.  Each home will have a Grid Tie Solar System with a two way meter. Any time the sun is out your meter will be running backwards, greatly reducing your monthly electricity bill. All electric systems for both the neighborhood mainline and private home systems have been designed by licensed engineers and installed by professional electricians.

Is there a need for an erosion control strategy?

EcoOsis carefully considers Erosion Control into our permaculture design and implementation. (Zone 3-4) Due to the heavy rains that can occur during certain months in Costa Rica, it is important to protect any edges or erosion prone areas with the amazing and deep rooting Vetiver plant.
